The difference in one line
Dry skin lacks oil. Dehydrated skin lacks water. Dry is a skin type you are born with and keep; dehydrated is a temporary condition anyone can develop, including someone with oily skin. Treating dehydration with heavier oils, or dryness with more water-based serums, is why so many winter routines fail.
What the skin barrier actually is
The outermost layer of the epidermis — the stratum corneum — is often described as a brick wall. Flattened dead skin cells are the bricks; a lipid matrix of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids is the mortar holding them together.
That mortar has one critical job: keeping water in. When it is intact, water loss through the surface is slow and controlled. When it is depleted, water escapes faster than it can be replaced — transepidermal water loss — and irritants get in more easily. That is barrier damage, and it produces tightness, flaking, stinging and sensitivity at the same time.
Dry skin: a lipid deficit
Dry skin produces less sebum than it needs. It is genetic, tends to be lifelong, and gets more pronounced with age as sebum production declines.
How it looks and feels: dull, rough, flaky. Fine lines are more visible. Small or invisible pores. Rarely feels greasy at any point in the day. Often dry on the body too — legs, arms, hands.
What it needs: lipids. Ceramides, squalane, shea butter, fatty acids, richer creams and balms. Water alone runs straight out because there is not enough oil to hold it.
Dehydrated skin: a water deficit
Dehydrated skin does not have enough water in the upper layers, whatever its oil production. This is why oily skin can be dehydrated — and frequently is, because harsh cleansers and over-exfoliation strip the barrier while leaving the sebaceous glands untouched.
How it looks and feels: tight, especially after cleansing. Dull with a lack of bounce. Fine, crinkly lines that appear when you pinch the cheek and take a moment to settle. Can be simultaneously flaky and shiny. Makeup clings to patches.
What it needs: humectants to bring water in — hyaluronic acid, glycerin, panthenol — followed immediately by something to seal it. A humectant applied alone in dry winter air can actually pull water from the deeper skin and let it evaporate. It must be sealed.

Why Ontario winters cause the second one specifically
Cold air holds very little water. At −10°C, air is close to saturated at a tiny absolute humidity — so when it is warmed indoors to 21°C, its relative humidity collapses to well under 20%. That is desert-range air, in your living room, for four to five months.
Water moves from wetter to drier. In an environment that dry, evaporation from the skin surface accelerates sharply. Forced-air heating — standard across most London homes — makes it worse by circulating that dry air continuously.
Add the specifics of a Southwestern Ontario winter: the temperature swing between −15°C outside and a heated car or office, wind on exposed skin during lake-effect squalls, and longer, hotter showers because you are cold. Hot water is the most underestimated factor here — it strips the lipid mortar directly.
The result is predictable: dehydration and barrier compromise from roughly November through March, in skin that behaves perfectly well in July.
Signs your barrier is damaged, not just dry
• Products that never stung now sting on application
• New sensitivity or reactivity to things you have used for years
• Tightness that returns within minutes of moisturising
• Flaking alongside oiliness
• Redness that lingers
• Breakouts appearing while the skin also feels dry
That last combination confuses people most. A compromised barrier lets irritants in and disrupts the skin’s balance, so congestion and dryness coexist. If you have recently added an active, check whether it is purging or a reaction before reaching for anything stronger.
What to change between November and March
Cleanse gently. Swap foaming cleansers for cream or milk formulas. Lukewarm water only — hot water dissolves the lipids you are trying to preserve.
Cut exfoliation roughly in half. Whatever your summer frequency, reduce it. Over-exfoliation is the leading cause of winter barrier damage, not the weather itself.
Layer damp, not dry. Apply humectant serums to slightly damp skin, then seal within a minute with a ceramide moisturiser. Sealing is what makes the difference in dry air.
Add an occlusive at night. A thin layer of a balm or occlusive over your moisturiser on the driest areas dramatically reduces overnight water loss.
Run a humidifier in the bedroom. Raising indoor humidity to 40–50% addresses the cause rather than the symptom. It is the highest-value change most people can make.
Keep wearing sunscreen. UV persists through cloud and reflects off snow. Winter UV damage is real and ongoing.

How long does a damaged barrier take to repair?
Two to four weeks of simplified, gentle care for mild damage. Longer if it has been building for months. Repair means removing the aggravators — actives, scrubs, hot water, foaming cleansers — and supplying ceramides and fatty acids while the lipid matrix rebuilds. Adding more products does not accelerate it.
Frequently asked questions
Can oily skin be dehydrated? Yes, and it commonly is. Oil production and water content are independent — stripping cleansers often trigger both dehydration and more oil.
How do I know if it’s dry or dehydrated? Pinch your cheek gently. If fine crinkly lines appear and take a moment to settle, that is dehydration. Rough, flaky texture without that crinkle points to dryness.
Does drinking more water fix dehydrated skin? It supports overall hydration but will not repair a compromised barrier. Water is lost at the surface, so the fix is applied topically.
Should I stop using retinol in winter? Not necessarily — reduce frequency and buffer it over moisturiser. Stop temporarily only if the barrier is actively damaged.
